IST

✓ Pros

  • +Turkish Airlines serves more countries than any other carrier — IST is a non-stop from over 300 cities
  • +No visa for US, UK, Canadian and EU passports — 90 days in any 180
  • +Prices run two to three times below Western European capitals
  • +Layered history by day, a serious bar scene by night
  • +One Istanbulkart covers trams, ferries and the metro — top it up once and stop thinking about it

⚠ What to keep in mind

  • !Summer crowds are brutal — the shoulder seasons are worth planning around
  • !The traffic is genuinely awful — allow 1.5x whatever the map says
  • !Street sellers around the bazaars are persistent; you have to be comfortable saying no

❓ Common questions

Which airport is easier — IST or SAW?

IST, the new airport, handles most international flights. SAW (Sabiha Gökçen, on the Asian side) is the low-cost base. Reckon on about 45 minutes to the centre by metro from IST, about an hour from SAW.

Where is best to stay?

Sultanahmet (the historic core) puts you next to Hagia Sophia. Karaköy/Beyoğlu suits late nights. Kadıköy on the Asian side feels lived-in and costs less.

Can you drink the tap water?

Not advisable. Buy bottled — a litre and a half costs 5-10 lira.

What currency should we bring?

Turkish lira. Change euros or dollars in the city — exchange offices beat both the banks and the airport. Cards work almost everywhere, but keep cash for the markets and taxis.
